The Effectiveness of Criminal Mediation: An Alternative to Court Proceedings in a Canadian City

    Get PDF
This study examines a criminal diversion program. Of principle interest is the diversion program\u27s effect on specific deterrence. This investigation utilizes a case study design. Individuals were selected from court dockets and mediation-diversion files. The cases were divided into three groups: diverted cases, cases that qualified but were processed by the court system, and cases handled by the court system. A follow-up looking for recidivism was performed. Additionally, personal data were gathered and the effects of age, education, occupation and ethnic group were controlled for in an analysis of covariance

The Juvenile Court: A Case in Organization Behavior

    Get PDF
Most of the research in juvenile justice decision making has focused on outcomes, the criteria on which outcomes are based, the doctrine of parens patriae or the concept of individualized justice. Both of these approaches lose much of the richness of organizational behavior and organizational processes to an empirical calculus that does not portray an accurate image of how juvenile justice decisions are made. These perspectives blur our vision because they conceal that decisions in juvenile court are socially produced by the varied actors and agencies in the juvenile judicial system. This report adopts a gestalt perspective of juvenile justice decision making. The gestalt perspective emphasizes that the functioning of parts is determined by the nature of the whole, and social wholes are functionally indivisible. It will demonstrate that juvenile court decisions do not hinge on one key actor or one or two key variables. Rather, they are a social product, produced by several actors involved in various locations in the adjudication and the disposition of juvenile justice

    Contouring Trivariate Data

    Get PDF
In many applications, the data consist of discrete 3-D points at which one or more parameters are given. To display contours, the data are represented by a continuous function which is evaluated at any point as needed for contouring. Contouring results are presented which are applicable both to artitrarily spaced data and to data which lie on a topologically rectangular three dimensional grid. the contours are assumed to be described by 3-D display lists for viewing on a dynamic color graphics device; that is, they will not simply be projected into 2-D and viewed as a static image on a frame buffer. Dynamic viewing of color contours may be essential to the proper interpretation of results. The gridded data lie on a topologically rectangular grid although two or more nodes may be the same point. Parametric tensor product methods may be used to fit the gridded data and to generate the contours. Rectangular elements are convenient but not necessary. For example, there are other methods which are effective for contouring over tetrahedral elements

In Situ Production of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles in a Binary Molten Salt for Concentrated Solar Power Plant Applications

    Get PDF
Seeding nanoparticles in molten salts has been shown recently as a promising way to improve their thermo-physical properties. The prospect of such technology is of interest to both academic and industrial sectors in order to enhance the specific heat capacity of molten salt. The latter is used in concentrated solar power plants as both heat transfer fluid and sensible storage. This work explores the feasibility of producing and dispersing nanoparticles with a novel one pot synthesis method. Using such a method, CuO nanoparticles were produced in situ via the decomposition of copper sulphate pentahydrate in a KNO3-NaNO3 binary salt. Analyses of the results suggested preferential disposition of atoms around produced nanoparticles in the molten salt. Thermal characterization of the produced nano-salt suspension indicated the dependence of the specific heat enhancement on particle morphology and distribution within the salts
